“Looking Longer” (2017) was a series I completed as an undergraduate student. While I haven’t kept most of my student work visible online, this project was an early exploration into my main line of inquiry as an artist – how technology shapes and changes our experiences of life, and how the ways we use it reflect our desires.
For each work in the series, I asked a friend to spend a moment looking at a digital image of work by a famous artist while a webcam tracked their eye movement. I layered a heatmap of their eye movement over the image of the artwork and screenprinted the combined image. The additional labor of printing each image was a nod to the hours artists put into their work for it to be viewed only briefly by most people.
